Stay long enough to belong.

Most people see Hunza in about five days. They photograph Attabad Lake, cross a suspension bridge, eat apricots, and go. Nothing wrong with that. But the valley is a different thing entirely once you have been here long enough to know whose orchard is whose.

We host volunteers in Ghulkin, a Wakhi village in Gojal, Upper Hunza. You live with the family in the same house as our homestay guests, and you make yourself useful.

What volunteers actually do

English is the big one. Children in the village learn it at school, but practice with a native or fluent speaker is scarce and it changes their prospects. Beyond that it is honest village work: helping around the guest house, the kitchen, the orchards and the irrigation channels, depending on the season and what you are good at.

If you have a skill we do not have, say so. Photography, web things, first aid, carpentry, teaching anything at all. Small villages absorb useful people quickly.

What you get out of it

Wakhi food, a room, and the valley at walking pace. You will end up on the treks too, because Ali is going anyway and it is easier to bring you along than explain the route. Most volunteers leave speaking a bit of Wakhi and a bit of Urdu.

Being straight with you

This is a family homestay in a remote mountain village, not a funded NGO placement. There is no certificate at the end and no formal programme structure. Electricity and internet in upper Gojal are what they are. Winter is genuinely cold and genuinely quiet. Come because you want to live here for a while, not because you want a line on a CV.

Practical

You will need a Pakistani tourist visa, and the rules changed at the start of 2026, so apply for the eVisa through the official NADRA portal well ahead and check the current requirements yourself before booking flights.
